English Heritage call for enquiry

English Heritage has called for plans for a new shopping development to be put before a public enquiry.

The £150m scheme will lead to 30 buildings being demolished 18 of which in conservation areas.

They have already written to the government in the North West and hope that the decision will be taken to the Secretary of State following a public inquiry.

Waste is still being recycled

Council bosses have assured members of the public that waste sent for recycling in South Lakeland is not being sent to landfill.

At a meeting of South Lakeland District Council, Brenda Woof, cabinet portfolio holder for environment assured councillors that despite the fall in the price of renewables, caused by the economic slowdown Lakeland District Council recyclable waste was still being recycled

OAPs tackle fuel poverty

An event at Windermere Fire Station to inform older people about the support that is available to them so they can beat the cold snap took place this week.

The event that was organised by the South Lakeland District Council Strategic Partnership.


Over 22 per cent of households in the Westmorland and Lonsdale area live in fuel poverty, which means that a household spends 10 per cent or more of its income on keeping warm.
